Xanax and Pregnancy

Anxiety and neuroses, stress, irritability, impairment of sleep and somatic disorders – all these common situation of our daily life can be treated with the help of Xanax. But before start treatment therapy, consult with your doctor, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Here are some contraindications of Xanax in pregnancy period.

During pregnancy, Xanax should be used only in exceptional “life” cases. Scientists argue, that Xanax causes toxic effects on the fetus and increases the risk of birth defects when used in the I trimester of pregnancy. Therapeutic doses in the later stages of pregnancy can cause neonatal CNS depression.

The constant use during pregnancy can cause physical dependence with the development of withdrawal syndrome of the newborn. Children, especially at a younger age, are very sensitive to the central nervous system benzodiazepines depressing action. Xanax use just before birth or during labor may cause respiratory depression in the newborn, decreased muscle tone, hypotension, hypothermia and a weak act of sucking (syndrome of “flaccid child”). During lactation period women should abandon breastfeeding, if they take Xanax.
